5 Stars Excellent Film and Excellent Blu-Ray
I bought the original DVD of this movie and I was very disappointed with the quality of that transfer. The Blu-Ray version however is amazing.
Having grown up playing Doom, it was great to see what basically is the same plot but in live action and not as cheesy as the Doom movie was. The special effects hold up very well and the direction of the film is great. A lot of tension and suspense.
If this movie interests you then you should try the video game Dead Space as well.
5 Stars Great Movie
Great movie. They really enhanced this over the old VHS tape I had. I loved this movie back then, and I love it even more now. Colors were great and so were the details.
4 Stars A Good Follow-up For Event Horizon Fans
This is a well-made sci-fi horror film standing out in a genre where so few of them make much of an impact beside great ones like Alien. The cast is strong, portraying well scripted characters. The horror is constant and genuinely creepy throughout. I can’t think of too many other sci-fi horror films that do a better job.
As far as the Special Edition is concerned, fans of the movie such as myself, will be pleased at the amount of attention spent on a movie over ten years old. Film documentary watchers will have plenty to watch and the deleted scenes are interesting to see without the special effects placed in. A good amount of content for film enthusiasts.
4 Stars Finally on Blu-ray
If you’re looking at the Blu-ray reviews and deciding whether to purchase then you’ve likely already seen this flick so I will not waste your time with the stuff you already know.
I picked this up locally the day it came out. Now you bought your Blu-ray player for jaw dropping visuals one would assume. This movie will NOT give that to you. That being said, the movie is a lot sharper on Blu-ray, the colors are more distinguished, and you will notice more in the background. The truly impressive visuals are found in the warp drive - spike ball, gyroscope engine drive thing. There is a grainy look to the film as well.
If you’ve been a fan of this movie by all means purchase it. It’s a unique film, a piece of art in my opinion and well worth the money. HD snobs who can’t get beyond a PERFECT transfer will trash the movie as you have already read if you’ve made it this far down the line of reviews
3 Stars BLU RAY Review
Love the movie but no wow effects on the video quality. Id say that the upconversion on the standard dvd would be of same detail that of this blu ray edition.

This unclassifiable but stunningly original film obliterates the walls between teen comedy, science fiction, family drama, horror, and cultural satire–and remains wildly entertaining throughout. Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky) stars as Donnie, a borderline-schizophrenic adolescent for whom there is no difference between the signs and wonders of reality (a plane crash that decimates his house) and hallucination (a man-sized, reptilian rabbit who talks to him). Obsessed with the science of time travel and acutely aware of the world around him, Donnie is isolated by his powers of analysis and the apocalyptic visions that no one else seems to share. The debut feature of writer-director Richard Kelly, Donnie Darko is a shattering, hypnotic work that sets its own terms and gambles–rightfully so, as it turns out–that a viewer will stay aboard for the full ride. –Tom Keogh

5 Stars Amazon might have wrong listing or different version
I went to best buy today and this release is not only a 2 disc release(amazon says 1 disc), but also has both the director’s cut and the regular version of the movie so Amazon’s listing is either wrong, not updated or they have a different version.
5 Stars Director’s Cut is waaay Underrated
What’s NOT to like about it? For me, the DC is far better than the original. Some scenes cut from the original are simple but very emotional and should have never left the movie in the first place. The soundtrack is just the way the director had originally intended and they had more time to work with the special effects.
And well, yes, the original movie is far more “open” to interpretation, but that isn’t necessarily a good thing. As for me, I liked to know what the director’s idea for what was behind the events that happened in the movie was.
DD:DC is one of my favorite movies EVER.
5 Stars Genius
What can one say about Donnie Darko ?
It’s pure genius plus one of the biggest Mind [...] of any movie I have ever seen.
The soundtrack alone is worth watching it over and over .
Jake Gyllenhaal gives a performance that is not only Oscar worthy but well crafted beyond his years.
The whole cast is amazing as well.
I have dealt with the schizophrenic mind first hand what most people don’t realize is most people with this disorder are highly highly intelligent and some are genius’s.
You can be speaking to a schizophrenic and they’re right on scope and displaying these highly intelligent qualities then out of the blue they’re mind makes a left turn and where it leads from that point can be anything from Frank the bunny to the CIA chasing them.
This is why Donnie Darko works so well and the whole ambiguous atmosphere is apropos.
if you want to view something light that doesn’t make you think this movie is not for you.
I guarantee if you watch this movie with an open mind and clear your emotional pallet beforehand
it will stay with you forever.
4 Stars Not the director’s cut?
I love this movie, I love the theatrical version, but I really love the Director’s Cut! I am disappointed that the Blu-Ray release does not have the longer version on it, which I feel is a much more complete movie.
5 Stars Top 100 movies of all time
I’ve never seen a movie like this. The movie has a beautiful aspect (especially the end). And there are a few chuckles as well. Contrary to the more critical commentary, there is depth and complexity to the story that kind of requires you to see it more than once. I’m no genius, but what I gathered the basis of Donnie Darko to be is about our part in the deliberate DESIGN of our destiny, and I catch more each time I watch it.
Regardless of anything, sincere thought and expression went in to the making of Donnie Darko. Mixed with skill and technical ability = Art.
A WORK OF ART! In the top 100 movies of all time in my opinion.
Michael Powell Double Feature Age of Consent Stairway to Heaven

A true marvel, A Matter of Life and Death is one of the best films by the storied English filmmaking team known as the Archers: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Among other felicities, this 1946 fantasy has one of the most crackling opening ten minutes of any movie you’ll ever see: after a deceptively dreamy prologue, we are thrown into the conversation between an airman (David Niven) whose torched plane is about to crash in the English Channel, and an American military radio operator (Kim Hunter) operating the radio on the ground. Their touching exchange, made urgent by his imminent death, is breathtakingly visualized (you have never seen a WWII plane interior quite as vividly as this). What follows is glorious: Niven’s death has been missed by an otherworldly collector (Marius Goring)–all that thick English fog, you know–and so he gets to argue his case for life before a heavenly tribunal. The heaven sequences are in pearly black-and-white, the earthly material in stunning Technicolor (the color is the cause of a particularly good in-joke). The Powell-Pressburger brief on behalf of humanity is both romantic and witty, and the wonderful cast is especially enriched by Roger Livesey (the star of Powell and Pressburger’s The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp), as a doctor with a camera obscura and an enormous heart.
Age of Consent, the other film in this two-disc set, comes from a much later period in Powell’s career–indeed, close to the end of it. Made on a low budget in Australia in 1969, the movie depicts a disenchanted painter (James Mason) finding renewal in the isolation of an island and the beauty of the young woman (Helen Mirren) who models for him. The salt-and-pepper authority of Mason and the nubile freshness of Mirren give pleasure, although the theme is too on-the-nose (and Jack MacGowran’s comic relief too broad) for a really subtle take on Powell’s part. Extras include a seven-minute Martin Scorsese comment for AMOLAD, and a commentary track on that film by Powell-Pressburger authority Ian Christie; Scorsese chimes in again for Age of Consent, as does Helen Mirren, whose memories of her first movie are specific and fond. Kent Jones contributes the commentary track, a 10-minute interview with underwater photographers Ron and Valerie Taylor includes some Mirren comments, and a 16-minute making-of documentary gives some flavor of the set, including the memories of Powell’s son Kevin. –Robert Horton

5 Stars Finally,A true studio release on DVD! Love this film!
this film has been a long time coming to DVD,,(Despite the region 2 editions which were useless here in the states) until the intro of region friendly players now,,but needless to say.A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH,is to me,the quintessential film of Pressburger & Powells works, and excellent introductive to their collected films, for anyone interested in their work, and if for no other reason, the cinematography of Jack Cardiff, stand alone as a testament to its art. the Brilliance of color, and tone, and visual contrast.even more so enchanced with this remastered edition.timeless in its meaning, and ideas abour love, and romance in the universe.which out shine its original ideas of propaganda during World War II, the performances, no less than sublime,as well as verbally amusing..Kim hunter,David Niven(Peter Carter)and of course,Roger Livesey( Dr Frank Reeves)who is a staple in most of the Powell films, as is Kathleen Byron as the celestial registrare. And a brilliant performance by MariusGoring as conductor 71..A-must see,and have for any film buff,or student,,,(take note of Scorcese’s comments to this film,as well as his admiration for this dynamic, and groundbreaking film duo.
5 Stars I like Michael Powell
My husband knows the names of all the actors, directors, writers, cameramen, etc. I may remember the name of a movie. He is perfectly happy to watch a movie that goes nowhere as long as the technical aspects are good; I like some sort of connective action and don’t really care about how the lighting is achieved. Michael Powell’s movies are a rare source of agreement. Michael Powell tells a good story. His techniques satisfy my husband’s critical values; his writing satisfies mine. Two things strike me about any Michael Powell movie: first, that any one of his movies will hold you, regardless of how many times you have seen it before; and second, when only war propaganda movies were allowed to be made, Powell used the restrictions to hone his tales — you will never guess that it is war propaganda. Sorry none of this is very witty — it would be easier if I could think of something bad to say. I can’t. Powell’s movies are a great time.
5 Stars A Fabulous Powell Double-Feature, Long Overdue!
If you are unfamiliar with the magnificent film work of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, have you got a treat in store for you! Two of my favorite films, the unforgettable “A Matter of Life and Death” (known in America as “Stairway to Heaven”), and the witty, mature “Age of Consent”, have been packaged together as the “Michael Powell Double Feature (Age of Consent, Stairway to Heaven)”. This is a MUST-BUY DVD SET!!!
1946’s “Stairway to Heaven” is as close to a perfect fantasy as you’ll ever see on film, offering one of David Niven’s greatest performances, as a downed airman, living, literally, on borrowed time, as he missed being snatched by death. Soon, he starts hallucinating from a brain tumor, and he stands trial in heaven (strikingly portrayed in black and white, as opposed to the rich, technicolor ‘real’ world), for his right to continue living. A perfect cast, including young Kim Hunter, Marius Goring, Raymond Massey, Robert Coote, and the fabulous Roger Livesey, plus a humane, witty script, combine to create one of the best films ever made!
1969’s “Age of Consent”, Powell’s last film, while not as ’stellar’ (in every sense of the word) as “Stairway”, is a remarkable film in it’s own right, as a bohemian Australian artist (James Mason, in one of his favorite roles), walks away from a lucrative art career in New York, and takes up a beachcomber life on an island of the Great Barrier Reef. He soon meets nubile young Helen Mirren (in her film debut), and they enter a richly productive (and platonic) relationship, as he paints unabashedly sensual nudes of her, and she renews in him a passion to create. While the comic relief of Mason’s moocher acquaintance Jack McGowran is sometimes criticized as too broad, I don’t think it hurts the film (the residents of the island are also portrayed as more than a bit balmy). The film’s pacing is relaxed, the visuals, breathtaking, and Mason and Mirren are wonderful together! The story, incidently, is loosely based on the life of an actual Australian artist, Norman Lindsay, and would be retold in 1994’s “Sirens”, with Sam Neill as Lindsay.
With terrific insights by Powell fan Martin Scorcese, Helen Mirren, and Powell’s son, Kevin, and great commentaries, this will be a double feature you’ll treasure!
5 Stars 2009 Sony Pictures release of “aMoLaD”
Having owned the VHS tape and the 1998 Carlton R2 Edition of aMoLaD I can report that picture *and* sound quality on this new release are *far* superior to those two previous releases. Sony Pictures have done an excellent restoration. If Criterion isn’t ever going to release aMoLaD this is the next best thing. I haven’t yet screened “Age of Consent,” and in any case don’t have anything to compare it with; it’s worth buying the Double Feature just to get this one.
3 Stars DVD5, interlaced, aspect strange
I won’t go into the film -Age of Consent- itself, that was handled by the 4 paragraph review, who apparently thought the DVD transfer was perfect.
That is not my opinion: 106 min movie unnecessarily compressed to 3.7GB (rather than ~7GB of most DVDs. Interlacing is evident when upscaled on oppo 980/42″ plasma (NOT top equipment here), aspect ratio is -apparently- re-cropped to 2:1 (memory tells me this was 4:3 or euro/australia 1.66 but I could be wrong, and can find no solid source, other than 35mm film stock).
Could -definitely- have been better, but very watchable and much clearer than my VHS version (4:3, no apparent side cropping/pan&scan, and notably -does Not- cut off Helen’s face in the first underwater shot, among others. Typical untalented mask-crap, I guess to save bits/sec so they could save that 2/1000ths of a cent using DVD5 media
A shame to minimize the effort for what is arguably the most perfectly captured underwater nude scenes of all time - and with an astonishingly beautiful actress.
(also, this DVD terribly confuses PowerDVD, nearly unwatchable on -my- PC (half the chapters & no running time while viewing) Mebbe I got a bad copy…

3 Stars Funny, but not funny enough
I was ready for Bender’s Game to be over about 40 to 45 minutes in. There just isn’t enough comedy, certainly not enough laugh out loud comedy, in the DVD for me. The production value of Bender’s Game is great as the film looks and sounds wonderful. But looks and sound just aren’t enough to carry a Futurama movie 80+ minutes without substantial jokes.
Overall, Bender’s Game isn’t something that I’ll need to watch again. Mind you, I’m not saying it was bad, rather that it is more forgettable and didn’t grab my attention like the first movie did.
2 Stars Nuking the Fridge
If there was ever an example of “Nuking the Fridge” or “Jumping the Shark” this would be it. I am sitting around enjoying this movie then they decide to dump all the characters into a Lord of the Rings spoof with a paper thin explanation. Last time I checked, this was a Science Fiction series. The worst part is the first 20 minutes of the show is probably some of the best pacing and writing out of the 3 DVD releases so far. If you watched the first 20 minutes of this movie then skipped to the last 5 minutes to complete the storyline; it would probably be one of the best episodes of Futurama. Instead, we are stuck with a Lord of the Rings parody that no one asked for or wanted to see.
2 Stars The Futurama Movies Just Keep Getting Worse. Bring Back the Show!
I appreciate what some of the others have said about this movie being more reminiscent of the series. Indeed, I actually laughed out loud several times during this movie which is more than I can say for “Beast.” However, the plot here is flimsy, especially when transitioning from one dimension to another without any type of realistic explanation. True, it is a comedy show and we can suspend some disbelief, but the beauty of Futurama lies in the solid strings it still attaches to science, which makes the science fiction all the more fun. While this film was worth a couple of laughs, it had me pining for the series to return with tighter writing, less filler, and memorable episodes that keep us clamoring for anything Futurama. As a feature length film it just isn’t working. Since I own all the episodes and films to this point, of course I will order the upcoming last film in the series. But I feel already that it is going to be a relief to be finished with this phase of Futurama. I earnestly hope that someway, somehow, the series can land once again rather than resorting to another failed experiment like these feature length films.
5 Stars Futurama ALWAYS delivers and Bender’s Game is sure to be in the Top 10 lists of 2009
I loved it. Watched it without commentary. Then watched it again WITH commentary. Then watched it again without commentary.
Pure Genius.
2 Stars Benders Game.
As a Futurama Fan I hate to admit this movie was an incoherent boring let down. And I was really hoping it would make up for its’ lackluster predecessor. Futurama has proven itself to be smarter. Also…I don’t totally undestand why the shows focus has shifted towards bender away from a great ensemble of characters that have unfairly become downgraded.

4 Stars Loads Of Fun
Death Race isn’t the kind of film, that will any awards, in fact from a harsh critical stand point, the film could be seen as nothing more than a big budget B-movie, however that’s what makes the film fun. In the lead Jason Statham gives the kind of performance, Stallone would’ve brought to the film if it were re-made ten years ago. Statham is given plenty of choices to get hit, throw punches and deliver one-liners. In the second male lead as Machine Gun Joe, Tyrese pretty much walks through the role. One would expect Tyrese to have a ball with the role, but ironically he seems bored with the role. However no one watches this type of movie for the acting, you watch it for the action and there’s plenty of it in Death Race. So pop some corn, grab a coke and enjoy the ride.
3 Stars Not bad, but nowhere as good as the original Death Race 2000
This loose remake to the original Death Race is an over the top, big budget film that works to a certain extent. The film has a lot of good elements that work for a Paul Anderson movie; the cinematography, the action scenes, and even some of the story is plausible.
So what is wrong with Death Race? Simple the plot is too simplified; its just cars blowing up, extreme gunfire, and stylized action sequences. The movie doesn’t have the soul of the original death race. While the plot is somewhat clever and different…it just doesn’t have the humor or the cheesiness of the original. Nevertheless it’s still a solid popcorn action flick.
MY PERSONAL RATING: 3 OUT OF 5
5 Stars Action packed
blu-ray is great. if you like action and blood, this is the movie for you.
4 Stars It is what it is
If you’ve read the critic reviews of this movie prior to watching you’re expecting a horrible movie, devoid of any sort of enjoyment whatsoever. To a point they are right, there are a lot of ways that this movie lacks. The story is pretty weak, and there is an awful lot of overacting in this movie.
But that said, the movie is what it is. Action packed from beginning to end and enough to keep any action junkie satisfied.
Don’t put too much into this film and you’ll get what you should expect, a fun diversion for an hour and 45 minutes with enough groans and “ewws” to make you not regret it.
5 Stars Blu-Ray Death Race Best of its Kind!!!!
Death Race Best of its Kind… This is a Bell Weather Blu-Ray up there with Iron Man…for an Example of an Show Case into HD Blu-Ray…
Death Race is death to the finish car race in the prison system. Action is great…I am not going to get into the movie in my review …This is a must see movie with this regular DVD looking like High Def with great color saturation and now I have the Blu-Ray as well and Blu-Ray is Slightly better in depth and deeper color and Hi Def Sound…And yes I do recommend getting the Blu-Ray version…

1 Star Very poor quality video
I bought this DVD because I finally retired my VCR, and really like the movie. I was expecting quality of video to be at least as good as my fifteen year old tape. The picture was grainy from beginning to end.
I purchased Xanadu at the same time, and the quality was awesome.
5 Stars One of the best of all time
Being a writer and filmmaker, I would rate Somewhere in Time as one of the most thought-provoking films ever made. It goes beyond imagination to touch deeply embedded questions within our psyches that our established religions refuse to accept. Why? Because the one-shot at life concept fills their coffers with tithings to save our souls from eternal damnation. Wrong. No soul can possibly fulfill its destiny in one short life, especially if the body dies as a child. However, this film taps into that mostly secret thoughts we are taught to ignore. It’s that what-if kernal that nudges us to consider that we are now what we have earned to be based upon what we did in our earlier incarnations. It suggests that we should be much more careful in making choices because we will get exactly what we have earned.
Talk about a story of enduring love between two souls; one waited an entire lifetime for her soulmate to return; the other used the power of mind over matter to return “somewhere in time” to love her once again. Now that is love ….
5 Stars RICHARD’S YEARNING FOR ELISE, A SOUL-STIRRING LOVE!
THIS MOVIE TOUCHED MY HEART! IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL, LOVE STORY, ABOUT A MODERN DAY PLAYWRIGHT, WHO FALLS IN LOVE WITH A PHOTOGRAPHED PAINTING, OF A VERY BEAUTIFUL, WOMAN WHO LIVED IN 1912. I LOVED RICHARD COLLIER’S HANDSOME SELF. HE WAS SO GOOD LOOKING AND HANDSOME, AND SO FULL OF CHARM, THIS MAN IS THE TYPE OF MAN, THAT CAN TAKE A WOMEN’S BREATH AWAY, BY JUST BEING NEAR HIM! I LOVED THE SCENE WHERE, RICHARD AND ELISE, MEET WHEN ELISE IS YOUNG, AND SHE ASKED RICHARD IS IT YOU? AND HE SAYS YES! WHILE SHE WAS WALKING BY THE LAKE. AND I LOVED THE WAY RICHARD CAME TO ELISE’S ROOM, AND ASKED HER TO TAKE A WALK WITH HIM. I LOVED THE HEARTFELT EMOTION AND PASSION, THAT THEY HAD FOR EACH OTHER, IT WAS SO PROFOUND! I LOVED THE THEATRE SCENE, WHERE ELISE YEARNS FOR A MAN TO TOUCH THE SECRET REGIONS OF HER HEART, AND THAT SHE LOVES HIM, AND SHE LETS RICHARD KNOW ,WHO IS ALSO IN THE CROWD, WATCHING HER PERFORM, THAT IT IS HIM, THAT SHE IS TALKING TO, NOT THE PLAY. I ESPECIALLY LOVED THE PART ABOUT ELISE GETTING HER PICTURE TAKEN! I ALSO LOVED THE SOUL STIRRING MUSIC, OF THIS MOVIE, IT SAYS IT ALL! YOU WILL NEED TISSUES FOR THIS ONE, I HAVE SEEN IT MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS, AND I CRY, EACH TIME! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE! IT IS AWESOME!
5 Stars Somewhere in Time
A timeless classic, Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves are both so perfect for their roles in this beautiful love story. Everyone should see this movie at least once.
5 Stars Somewhere in Time
Great Movie, very good love story. Scenry really wonderful. Definitely worth watching. Makes one want to go to Mackinac Island and find romance.

5 Stars And here come some answers!
Wow!! that’s all I can say when it came to season 4 of LOST. There are people coming to the Island..who are they??? why are they here? how did they find this mysterious island? How old is Richard Alpert?? Flashforwards?? What?!?!
With each season of LOST we learn more and more about this island. We get an understanding that this island is very special and unique and that maybe you don’t really wanna leave it afterall. Hmmm.
All I can say is that I’m so glad I stuck by this show because it just keeps getting better with every season and every episode. I’m absoultey obsessed!
4 Stars Lost leaves you wanting more
The acting, story lines, and overall drama are terrific in this fourth installment of the Lost series. The episodes have great impact when you are able to watch several together, without commmercial interruptions. My only disappointment was that the writer’s strike limited the number of episodes available in this set.
5 Stars A Riveting 4th Season
Lost makes a big comeback in this abbreviated 4th season. In fact, the story line seems to have benefitted by having only thirteen episodes to tell it. Where the preceding season seemed to meander a bit and sometimes lose its narrative focus, here many of the dangling threads from Season 3 are gracefully resolved and the expansion of the settings from the island to the offshore freighter produce a consistently strong series of episodes.
Don’t miss “The Constant,” in which the Desmond Hume character assumes center stage and the actor playing him gives an Emmy-worthy performance. From there on the narrative gathers momentum and does something virtually impossible: make Linus a sympathetic character. The season finale episodes “There’s No Place Like Home (Pt. 1 & 2),” are a match for anything the cast and crew have ever done on this series. Part 2 in particular is riveting. In fact, it’s one of the best things I have ever seen on television, period. An awful lot of story lines get resolved in eighty minutes, yet every primary character in that episode takes on almost mythic dimensions. The finale is cinematic in its sweep and its eventfulness, in the best possible way.
I have to single out Michael Emerson as a tremendous actor, who never chews the scenery but effortlessly commands the screen, along with some of the supporting actors, such as Jeremy Davies (Faraday), Jeff Fahey (Lepidus, the copter pilot) and the superb Kevin Durand (Keamy), who add complexity and depth to the story line and are all sensational. But Season 4 really begins and ends with Ian Cusick (Desmond), whose devastating phone call in “The Constant” and his emotional reunion in the finale provide the emotional arc of the season and point the way forward to Season 5.
This is some of the best television going. The BluRay version is also sensational in quality. The whole thing is not to be missed. For me, this is one of the great series in television history.
Only one thing: something has to be done about Jack’s beard.
5 Stars Just spend the money already.
If you haven’t purchased LOST season 4 yet, just spend the money already; and while you have the credit card out get the first three seasons on DVD as well. LOST never disappoints and especially so in season 4. Trust me, buy season 4, drink the kool-ade and follow me.
5 Stars Very Nice

1 Star Have not received this yet!
I ordered 3 disney movies at the same time, from three different people. I got two of those movies within 2 wks of my order. I have yet to receive Dumbo! It should have been here no later than November 26th! I am definitely NOT happy with this seller.
4 Stars Fantastic!
My daughter loves this movie! She is 2 years old and fascinated with elephants.
5 Stars Disney’s Dumbo
My grandkids love to watch this movie (and I love to watch it with them).
It has great animation, and funny as well as tender scenes. When the mother elephant sings “Baby Mine, Don’t You Cry” I always water up. A great song from a great movie.
4 Stars Brings Me to Tears Every Time
Jumbo? Don’t you mean Dumbo!
And so the tearfest begins.
I loved this movie as a child and recently rediscovered it while visiting with my two year-old niece. As is typical for kids that age, we watched the movie everyday (sometimes twice) for a week.
Every time I cried.
I can’t really think of another Disney movie that depicts such a wonderfully loving and sweet relationship between parent and child (no Bambi didn’t do it for me).
Plus Dumbo is the self-doubting underdog throughout, which simply makes me love him even more.
Oh, and my niece, she squealed with delight for Dumbo’s triumphs each time and paid serious attention to the sad parts where mother and child are separated. Never underestimate a two year-old.
The only reason I stop short of giving it a 5-star is the dated depictions of excessive alcohol use, smoking and the stereotyping of the crows…yeah I know you can’t stereotype crows as such, but we can easily figure out to whom those stereotypes apply. Can’t go back in time and undo the social circumstances that made this acceptable childrens entertainment.
Overall, though the touching story of an outcast only a mother could love and his triumph over his tormentors is timeless.
5 Stars Best Disney movie for toddlers
I have various Disney movies and this is the best one for toddlers as it does not contain the thematic and real violence of a Peter Pan, nor sibling bickering like in Cinderella nor a too-hip attitude. Instead it is innocent and very positive in its message of overcoming your weaknesses and of self-esteem. (In fact I read an article that a company in India uses this movies to motivate its employees.) Aside from this, this movie is a masterpiece for people of all ages. The next best ones for toddlers are maybe Cinderella and The Jungle Book and when they are a little older Little Mermaid and Alice in Wonderland. For Aladdin and Lion King I’ll maybe wait until my little one is maybe 5.
