British funnyman Ricky Gervais is planning to quit acting to focus on direction. Last year, Gervais directed ‘Ghost Town’ and the success of the movie has tempted him to wear the director’s cap permanently. “I have fallen in love with directing now, almost as much as writing,” the Daily Star quoted Gervais as saying. “If I am going to drop one, I would phase out my acting. If you have got the stamina and someone gives you enough money, you can write, direct, act and produce. “(Former Briti

Ghost Town

Ricky Gervais is brilliant in Ghost Town, playing an unnervingly rude dentist, Bertram, who dies for a few minutes during surgery and acquires the unwanted ability to see ghosts. Chased throughout Manhattan by a gaggle of restless spirits begging him to take care of their unfinished business on Earth, Bertram turns them all away except Frank (Greg Kinnear). The latter, a rogue who cheated on his archaeologist widow, Gwen (T?a Leoni), wants Bertram to intervene in a romance between Gwen and a starchy activist (Bill Campbell). Misanthropic Bertram has to polish his relationship patter, but ends up sounding a lot like Gervais’ infamous character in the original The Office, unable to complete a sentence without making others uncomfortable. In time, of course, Bertram falls for the wonderful Gwen, setting up a bunch of overlapping conflicts. Cowritten and directed by David Koepp (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), Ghost Town walks a fine line between comic freshness and a story idea with elements that have become overly familiar in movies and on television. Kinnear and Leoni have never been better on screen, but Ghost Town is well worth seeing because no one like Gervais has previously played the hapless hero in a high-concept film such as this one. With Gervais doing his familiar, hilariously discomfiting thing, it really doesn’t matter what kind of movie Ghost Town is. Happily, it’s a pretty good film in every respect. –Tom Keogh

3 Stars From the moment I saw this, it could’ve been a lot worse.
I do like Ricky Gervais’ comedy such as what he did in “Night at the Museum” (there’s a sequel coming out). All said and done, I saw “Ghost Town” again on DVD and I had a bit of a worse experience with the film than I had in theaters. Don’t get me wrong, Ricky Gervais is very funny in a lot of his stuff. He had a few laughs that I tolerated for “Ghost Town,” but overall, it’s the type of movie I have to go see when I’m really in the mood, but overall, it’s a fine film.

Yes, I will have to admit it again, “Ghost Town” is a fine film. Don’t get me wrong.

“Ghost Town” tells the story of a guy named Bertram Pincus. He hates people and wants to hurt them for a living. He is a dentist. One day, he goes into a hospital and dies for seven minutes. When he wakes up, he has the annoying ability to see dead ghosts.

“Ghost Town” is a very cute movie, and the Blu-Ray doesn’t offer too much. There’s just commentary by Ricky Gervais and director David Koepp and some featurettes.

Overall, “Ghost Town” is an okay film. I liked it from the moment I saw it. It’s a nice friendly film and grownups would like this for a good date movie.

5 Stars Best movie I’ve seen in a long time!
I loved this movie. My kids couldn’t believe that I was actually laughing out loud since I haven’t done that in a long time. Dr. Pincus’ gag reflex got me every time. I believe it would be funnier to an over 35 crowd since younger people won’t get the attraction between the Tea Leoni character and the not-so-attractive Dr. Pincus.

5 Stars Ghost Town Bluray
This is an excellent movie. Never heard of it until I rented it. It is funny as can be.

5 Stars worth watching
Didn’t know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. This movie is worth watching.

5 Stars Funny!!!
This is one of the funniest movies i’ve seen!! Richy Gervais makes it! I’m leaving this square to go and buy it!

Madagascar Escape 2 Africa Blu ray

Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 02/06/2009 Run time: 89 minutes Rating: Pg

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Couldn’t get a lot cuter.
Some animation films are pretty cute, like “WALL-E” for example, which is fun-filled adventure for the whole family. And now we have “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” which is a fine bet for the family crowd. Unlike some movies like “Ghost Town” or “Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist,” “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” hits both those movies in the bell curve. “That’s a movie I could live with (instead)” says Skipper referring to the line “that’s a number I can live with.”

“Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” reunites Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo as they escape to the islands of Madagascar on the plane along with the Penguins, King Julien and Maurice. Surprisingly, Mort follows along with them along the ride. They try to go back to New York City in the Central Park Zoo where they can relive their lives.

Unfortunately, things don’t go well as they planned since their plane crashed landed in the continent of Africa. However, luck comes with Alex the Lion as he gets reunited with his parents. However, the penguins and the monkies are trying to find a way to fix the plane.

Then one day, the watering hole is dry. Alex the Lion must figure out a way to save the continent of Africa from being dried up.

The Blu-Ray offers a lot of stuff such as Music Videos and featurettes and an “Animator’s Corner.” Really the only thing missing is the Dreamworks Animation Jukebox, but I can get to the fact that there were no rock songs or Dreamworks rock songs in “Kung Fu Panda,” so why bother?

Bottom line is “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” is one of the much, much better movies to buy in stores as of right now - until next month when some of the Oscar nominees along with James Bond and “Bolt” come out on Blu-Ray. Kids will beg their parents for this as much as the little ones will beg for “High School Musical 3: Senior Year.”

5 Stars What a Darn Fun Movie
Madagascar Escape 2 Africa, it’s just a fun afternoon family enjoyable movie. How can you not like that theme song, I like to move it, the ear worm? The characters are all back, the penguins are hilarious, everyone is just fantastically funny in this movie. Alec Baldwin is just way too good in his role as the evil lion. The late Bernie Mac performs, and is given a mention before the credits roll at the end. A 12 and 18 year old with two parents watched this movie and laughed hard throughout.

Blu-Ray, oh my goodness. You wouldn’t think that animation would be so clear and so much better. But, truth be told, this is virtually the movie theater experience at home with the clarity, vibrant colors, and just fantastic sound. It’s just so worth watching in this version compared to DVD. Even the movie previews were spot on gorgeous (usually production companies will over compress the previews on DVD’s so that you get blocky previews - oh no, not on blu-ray, full quality here).

Technically, pacing is excellent, animation is superb, and surround sound is used to it’s maximum. The whole package works.

Sorry, I did not deeply explore the special features on this disc. There seem to be many. I watched one Plane Crash, thinking it might be a game or something enlightening. No it ended up being that same old nasty dribble about how they decided to make that one scene so cool. It’s lame beyond imagination, every disc seems to include this kind of useless junk that doesn’t enhance the film in any way. In a simple fun, entertaining film, this kind of thing is just not worth adding.

If you liked number 1, you will like number 2. Escape is a light funny entertaining movie for the whole family.

5 Stars Everything and More
After the Furious Five fiasco, Dreamworks has decided to give you all the goodies–and more–in the Blu-Ray release of Madagascar 2. Not only do you get the behind-the-scenes, commentary, and other extras of the DVD, you also get the two Penguin cartoons from the 2-pack DVD bundle…and…

Easter Eggs! Go to the Penguin episodes menu. Highlight an episode. Move the directional controller on your remote and a penguin appears! Each episode will let you slide off the menu to two penguins, for a total of four extra “short” animations that launch when you select the penguin.

The Penguin episodes (and shorts) are hilarious. The quality of the Blu-Ray version is eye-popping: while Kung-Fu Panda produces lots of color and detail, Madagascar 2 goes it one step further with some pretty amazing depth of focus. Some of the panning shots, for example, seem to pop off the screen.

In addition to all this, BD Live will connect you to other extras: we watched a pretty good short documentary about lions, for example. The way the menu is built makes me think there might be more to come.

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, Madagascar 2 is a bizarre and hilarious sequel. It introduces new characters, keeps the favorites from the first, and adds yet more movie spoofs and references for the grown-ups, some of them obvious (the Lion King) and some more obscure (The In-Laws). If you’re buying for a small child, chances are they might not follow the nuances of blu-ray: the DVD will upscale enough on most players. But for the best experience, this blu-ray is the version to buy.

5 Stars Another awesome BD with all the extras
Wow. One could spend some serious paragraphs dissecting all that is great about this one. Clarity, picture, colors, sounds, extras - they are all there.

As listed earlier, the much sought after Penguins episode is included on this BD, along with four music videos, fun games, trivia and plenty of material to give the kids some additional insight about all the that is Madagascar - and all in hidef! Oh yeah, the story is funny and has lines to keep both the adults and kids entertained.

The movie has been a hit in the store and shows off any HD display beautifully. The sound and music are mixed very well but the animation clarity even shows through enough for kids to say how “totally cool” it looks. Just had a pre-school class of girls visit the store for a field trip and all 7 of them loved it.

Hope you enjoy…forgot to mention: I laughed out loud more than a few times, those penguins are great (”…you’re all males..”) - gotta love it.

5 Stars penguin adventures
note: this blue ray includes the nick penguins episodes available in the dvd 2 pack
