An unfortunate number of romantic comedies released in 2009 were neither romantic nor comedic (I’m looking at you, Leap Year), so when It’s Complicated turned out to have ample helpings of both key elements, I was greatly relieved. The film follows Jane (Meryl Streep) as her fling with ex-husband Jake (Alec Baldwin) throws a wrench into her budding romance with Adam, her architect (Steve Martin). It’s brave, in our youth-obsessed culture, to base a romantic comedy around a couple in their fifties, but if anyone could make such a film successful it’s writer/director Nancy Meyers, who brought us The Holiday…

Tom Hanks is a giant of modern cinema, and an entire book could be written of Tom Hanks trivia regarding the varied parts he has played and awards that he has won over the course of his career. However, the truth is that Tom Hanks is also known as being one of the nicest men in Hollywood, and any Tom Hanks quiz should be summed up with one of the many interesting facts about any of the stories which demonstrate how kind, human, and generous this actor has proven to be to his public over the years since his rise to fame.
Of course, Tom Hanks trivia obviously must include his film work, so we’ll start there. Did you know that Tom Hanks has won back to back Oscars? He won the award for Best Actor in both 1993 and 1994 for his roles in Philadelphia and Forest Gump. Another measure of Hanks’ success can be seen if you examine the total worldwide gross income which has been earned by his films – an amount which totals over 3.5 billion dollars – the most of any film star. Hanks has been attached to just under twenty films that have earned over 100 million.
Hanks has been in some of the most well known movies of the last thirty years, including the aforementioned Forest Gump, but also including pictures like Apollo 13, Sleepless in Seattle, Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story, and the Da Vinci Code. This list, which is far from comprehensive, shows definitively that Hanks has experienced significant success across almost every genre in the film industry, having made some of the most memorable performances in comedy, drama, romantic comedy, action, and animation over the course of his career.
As mentioned previously, a good tidbit of information about Hanks would include something regarding his personal life and his kindness as a human being in addition to stories about his excellence as an actor. A recent one of these was associated with his filming of the sequel to the Da Vinci code in Rome. While filming, the crew realized a wedding was trying to make their way to their wedding site. Hanks greeted the bride and asked if he and director could attend the wedding, and later invited both the bride and groom to attend the premier of the film in Rome, a perfect example of his friendly demeanor and generous nature which have become legendary.

(In this weekly column, I’ll take two films, one old and one new, and compare them in terms of theme and substance, hopefully in some interesting ways. I’ll be trying not to spoil too much of these films, but in order to dissect them properly I’ll have to venture into spoiler territory a little.) (Minor Spoiler Warning for (500) Days of Summer and The Graduate follow) To dwell too long on the homage toward Mike Nichols’ The Graduate drawn by Marc Webb’s new non-romantic comedy (500)
Yahoo! Movies has debuted the trailer for upcoming romantic comedy “ When in Rome .” An ambitious young New Yorker ( Kristen Bell ), disillusioned with romance, takes a whirlwind trip to Rome where she defiantly plucks magic coins from a “foolish” fountain of love, inexplicably igniting the passion of an odd group of suitors: a sausage magnate ( Danny DeVito ), a street magician ( Jon Heder ), an adoring painter ( Will Arnett ) and a self-admiring model ( Dax Shepard ). But when a charming r
